How to Find the Perfect Red Lipstick for Every Skin Tone

There are many stereotypes and debates about red lipsticks. One phrase I hear constantly from my clients: "Red lipstick doesn't suit me." And almost every time, I know they're wrong - it would look absolutely incredible on them. You just need to choose the best red lipstick for your skin tone and understand what the full look should be.

Red lipstick attracts a lot of attention - and the secret is that everything has to be perfect in order to wear it.

WHO RED LIPSTICK DOESN’T SUIT

There are only 4 cases where no shade of red will suit perfectly - listen carefully! If this is not your case, then good news: red lipstick suits you!

  • For those with very thin lips, bright colors tend to draw attention to their shape rather than enhance it. A better approach? Make the eyes the focal point instead.

  • Those who have strong lip or mouth asymmetry. I want to emphasize the word “strong”, because if the asymmetry is not very noticeable, red lipstick can actually help correct it.

  • Uneven teeth are another reason to skip the red - it draws the eye directly to your smile for the wrong reasons. Focus on the eyes instead.

  • Yellow teeth and red lipstick can be a tricky combination - the wrong shade will make them look even more yellow. But choose carefully, and the right red can actually make your smile look brighter.

To get this effect, look for shades with a blue undertone - this is exactly what matters when choosing red lipstick for cool vs warm undertones. To test it: dab a little on your hand, blend it out, and see if it shifts toward raspberry or blue. If it does, that's your shade.

If you don’t have these “symptoms,” feel free to go to the store and find the best red lipstick of your life.

What lipsticks does a professional makeup artist in Miami recommend so that your lipstick lasts through heat, food, and kisses?

I recommend choosing matte lipsticks, because they suit absolutely everyone and won’t crease or wear off during the day, even if you eat and drink. When choosing between matte vs satin red lipstick for hot weather, matte always wins - especially in a climate like Miami's.

Avoid creamy and shimmery textures, and I absolutely do not recommend using pearly lipsticks, because in 100% of cases they will make you look older, appear cheap, and highlight wrinkles even if you don’t have any.

For the best wear, I always reach for liquid matte. When it comes to long-lasting red lipstick brands, MAED is one worth knowing. They suit any skin tone, from the lightest to the deepest. This brand has amazing formulas and caring ingredients, and I also recommend their lip balms, which you can find in the same line.

A classic red color is always the best choice if you don’t know which shade suits you. Classic works for everyone and is the base of many iconic red lip looks.

BEST MAKEUP TO PAIR WITH RED LIPSTICK

As I mentioned above, red or any bright lipstick is very demanding for the overall look. You can’t just put on red lipstick and go about your day.

This is especially important if you’re going for Miami night out makeup or creating glamorous red lips for South Beach - everything has to look polished and balanced.

I want to emphasize that you need perfect skin, perfect face shaping, blush that matches the lipstick tone, symmetrical brows, and eye makeup that doesn’t “scream.”

The best option for red lipstick is an elegant nude look or a classic makeup with eyeliner. Don’t forget to add lashes - ideally individual lashes for a more natural cat-eye effect.

HOW TO APPLY RED LIPSTICK CORRECTLY

If you are learning how to apply red lipstick for beginners, this is the most important part.

If you are using a classic lipstick (bullet form), don’t apply it directly to your lips. You will never create a clean shape this way. First, apply a lip liner, making sure it is sharpened. This will help you create an even and symmetrical contour. Then apply the lipstick using a separate flat synthetic brush.

With liquid matte lipstick, you don't need a lip liner - it's long-lasting and precise enough to shape your lips on its own. However, I still recommend using a flat synthetic brush - the sharper the brush, the cleaner your contour will be.

I understand that this type of makeup is one of the most difficult. It has to be very graphic, symmetrical, and perfect. But at the same time, it is the most striking and bold look.

That’s why doing this look on yourself without practice is very difficult. But nothing is impossible. I invite you to join my makeup courses and learn how to create this look yourself in just 15 minutes. I will share all my secrets and techniques so you can look flawless for any occasion.
